Otto Stove Top Coffee Maker

Challenge
OTTO is a Stove Top Espresso Maker that combines classic style with unprecedented functionality. The polished stainless steel espresso maker is precisely calibrated to produce two commercial quality espresso shots and ample steam pressure for texturing milk.

In homage to the form of the Atomic coffee maker, Tiller Design’s objective was to develop a exemplary pressure vessel that surpassed the Atomic’s performance whilst meeting stringent tolerances in mass production.

Solution
Tiller Design conducted extensive consumer insights research to gain new insights into the mechanics behind a quality coffee. Several team members even completed barista training.

In partnership with external consultants who specialised in fluid mechanics and stress analytics, The Tiller Design team engineered a product that met stringent mechanical, regulatory, functional and aesthetic requirements. All seals and mating surfaces needed to work reliably within the machine to perform to commercial standards.

OTTO was designed with sustainability in mind. Created as a mechanical product - not an electronic one - the espresso machine has an inherent longevity. Components are built to be repaired, rather than replaced.

Its durable stainless steel design means the product will maintain its looks and performance for years to come.

Engineering Development

Result
OTTO’s patented mechanism ensures exceptional coffee every time. A separate chamber controls when water passes into the group head, extracting coffee only when water reaches the correct temperature and pressure. The boiler ingeniously employs a dosage system that only allows a 60ml espresso to be extracted - perfect for two coffees while preventing burning of the grind. Full boiler pressure steams the milk.

The product features many patented and innovative solutions such as the prevention of burning of the coffee grind and automated boiler priming for steaming milk.
